Popocatépetl & Itzaccihuatl

Painting by Chicano artist 2hermano. Aztec warrior hold princess in his arms. Mexican muralist.

This mural is my version of the famous painting by Jesús Helguera, a piece that has always inspired me. While the original shows a fierce warrior, I wanted to explore Popo’s internal pain. By painting his eyes closed, I aimed to show his heartbreak rather than anger at the gods—a silent symbol of eternal love. The mural is located at the brand new restaurant, La Ciudad, and I’m so grateful to Ernesto Delgado for letting me bring this piece of history and heart to his new spot.
